Preface

Since Facebook introduced React in 2013, component-based UI frameworks have become increasingly popular. They allow you to build your applications as collections of self-contained, reusable components that can manage their own state and can be declaratively composed into more complex interfaces.

Vue.js: The Basics

Just as has occurred with other established frameworks, a collection of tools has sprung up around Vue. These tools facilitate the development of applications (such as code generation), prepare it for release or deployment (for example, compilation and packaging), or assist with debugging when the inevitable bugs creep in.

Vue Tooling

As we briefly touched on in Chapter 1, Vue was designed for creating component-based UIs. The idea is that you can structure your application around self-contained, reusable elements that represent a discrete part of the interface.

Components

One of the biggest changes in Vue 3 is the introduction of the Composition API as an alternative way of creating components. The Composition API is such a major addition to Vue that I felt it deserved its own chapter.

If you’ve built server-side web apps before, you’ll be familiar with putting some thought into the URL structure of your application.

Routing

As an application gets larger and more complex, you start to run into situations where a given piece of state needs to be used in multiple components. State can be information that your app works with—for example, the details of the logged-in user, or the current “state” of some parts of the UI, such as whether a particular piece of functionality is disabled or data is being loaded.

State Management

While Vue is frequently referred to as a framework, out of the box it doesn’t come with all the functionality you might need to build more sophisticated web applications, such as routing and state management.

Nuxt.js

In this last chapter, I’d like to put what we learned in the previous chapter (and indeed the rest of the book) into practice by building out an example universal web app.
