Kotlers 4P is still valid.
- Have a good product that creates value for your target group.
- Set the price so it is affordable for the target group (but still earning money)
- Distribute your product through channels that reaches your target group. (place)
- How you promote you product (ads, web etc)
My own experience is that before you have a product that creates value for your target group in some way, the promotion (marketing) will fail. Digital or not.
The most cost effective marketing is to have a good product that makes your customers happy, so they spread the word for you.
